From desert to oasis

Storing rainwater and irrigating in the desert with MDP.

In the desert, rain soaks into the dunes almost instantly and is lost. With the right storage and irrigation, that rain can be captured and used to bring land back to life.

The design

  • Waterproof liners are laid in the low points between dunes so rain can't soak away.
  • MDP is installed higher up the dunes and directs rainwater down to the lined areas. It drains fast and resists clogging, so it lasts.

Rain reaches storage quickly instead of being lost, and the stored water supports farming and grazing.

Step by step

  1. Site selection: find low points in the dunes for storage and check the sand suits a liner and MDP.
  2. Liner: use a durable liner rated for desert conditions and seal the edges to stop leaks.
  3. MDP: lay pipes on the higher ground, falling toward the storage area, and inspect them regularly.
  4. Water management: build a reservoir over the liner and feed a drip irrigation system.
  5. Planting: choose drought-tolerant species and mix them for a more stable ecosystem.
  6. Monitoring: use sensors for soil moisture and water level, and adjust irrigation from the data.

The challenges

Human activity has reduced the planet's biomass, and much of the world's forest has been lost or degraded. Turning desert into green land is possible, but it faces real obstacles: covering vast areas, soils that are poor in nutrients and structure or too saline, long-distance logistics, and above all losing water and soil without a working drainage system. That last problem is where MDP can help.

From desert to oasis is a concept.
