Tuen Mun Area 38: finding and protecting outfall diffusers
Airlift searches for buried outfall diffuser heads, then extending and protecting the risers with rockfill and cement sandbags.

Outfall diffusers sit on risers above a buried pipe. Over time silt covers them, and some get knocked out of place.
We drew two search methods from a crane barge: one for heads still standing where they should be, exposed by airlift, and a full search for heads that had moved or gone missing. Four diffuser types were shown in their actual ground: trench backfill, marine mud and rockfill.
Once found, each riser was extended with a PVC socket and protected with rockfill and cement sandbags. We also designed the suction head used for the search: a 4-inch intake on an 8-inch pipe with a 6-inch flexible hose and a flat-bar hook.
