Guishan Island, Zhuhai: a blockwork unloading jetty
Design of a gravity jetty built from precast concrete blocks, stacked in eight courses from −12 to +7.5 PD on a graded rock foundation.

A gravity jetty holds itself up by its weight. For a material unloading jetty at Bay 7 on Guishan Island we designed the whole structure in precast blocks.
- Foundation: about 1,500 m³ of 500–900 mm rock, 310 m³ of 150–220 mm rock and 70 m³ of 25–40 mm levelling stone, from −12.00 PD.
- Blocks: six types, M1 to M6 plus SM3, from 2,000 × 1,800 to 3,300 × 1,620 mm, laid in eight courses to +7.50 PD, with a row of capping blocks.
- Transport platform: a 600 mm I-beam platform on pile footings for handling the blocks.
Each course has its own layout drawing, so the blocks could be cast, numbered and placed in order.
