SkyPier, Hong Kong International Airport: pontoon moorings
Setting typhoon sinkers of up to 68 tonnes and installing the elastic mooring system for the landing pontoons at the airport's ferry pier.

SkyPier's landing pontoons have to stay put through typhoons while ferries berth against them every day. We set up landing pontoons No.1 and No.2 in a 12-step sequence:
- Lay the typhoon sinkers of 21, 42, 67.5 and 68 tonnes from an 80-tonne derrick lighter.
- Lay the sinkers for the elastic Seaflex mooring units.
- Straighten the typhoon sinker chains.
- Install the Seaflex units.
- Moor and fix each pontoon.
Each step was planned in working days, from 2 to 18, and some lifts were done overnight to keep the pier running. A dredger, derrick lighters and underwater marker buoys were used throughout.
